Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-10-21
WormaSounds is a macOS menu bar app for per-app volume, output routing and audio effects, published by wormadev. This policy describes what the app does with your data.
Summary
- Audio is processed on your Mac. WormaSounds never records, stores or transmits it.
- There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking and no ads.
- Your settings stay on your Mac.
- The app connects to the internet only to download headphone EQ profiles when you open the profile browser, and to check for updates.
Audio
WormaSounds uses the per-app audio taps built into macOS to change each app's volume, apply effects and send its audio to an output device. Audio passes through the app in memory, in real time, and goes straight to the output. It is not written to disk or sent anywhere.
The level meters read the audio signal to draw its level. Only the level is shown; the audio itself is not kept.
Permissions
- System Audio Recording. Required. macOS asks for it the first time WormaSounds taps an app. It lets the app change an app's volume, add effects and route its audio.
- Microphone. Optional. Used only to show the level meter for your input device. WormaSounds asks for it only when you click Enable in the Permissions window.
- Accessibility. Optional. Used only by Super Volume Keys, so the volume keys work on outputs that have no hardware volume control. WormaSounds asks for it in the first-run intro (you can choose Not Now) or when you turn the feature on. With this permission the app watches for the system's media and volume key events only. It does not read typed keystrokes.
You can revoke any of these in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
Network connections
WormaSounds makes these connections and no others:
- Headphone EQ profiles. When you open the headphone profile browser, WormaSounds downloads the AutoEq profile index from GitHub (
raw.githubusercontent.com/jaakkopasanen/AutoEq), and the profile file for any headphone you pick. Nothing about you or your settings is sent with these requests. The index is cached for 24 hours and downloaded profiles are cached on your Mac. - Update checks. WormaSounds uses the open source Sparkle framework to check for updates. On first run Sparkle asks whether to check automatically. An update check downloads an update feed from GitHub (
github.com/wormasounds/WormaSounds-releases). The request identifies the app name and version and the Sparkle version. Sparkle's optional system profiling is not enabled. If an update is available and you install it, the update is downloaded from the same GitHub repository.
These requests go to GitHub, which receives standard connection information such as your IP address. GitHub's handling of that information is covered by the GitHub Privacy Statement. wormadev does not receive or collect it.
Data stored on your Mac
- Settings are stored in the app's preferences (
~/Library/Preferences/com.wormadev.WormaSounds.plist). They include per-app volumes, outputs and effects keyed by app bundle identifier, device nicknames and settings, favorites, excluded apps, Quick Configs, keyboard shortcuts, the headphone EQ profiles you pick or import, Audio Unit plug-in settings, and window and intro state. - Cached AutoEq files are stored in
~/Library/Caches/com.wormadev.WormaSounds/AutoEq. - Diagnostic messages, such as audio engine errors, are written to the macOS system log on your Mac. They are not sent anywhere by WormaSounds.
None of this leaves your Mac. Deleting the app and these files removes it.
Third-party plug-ins
If you add an Audio Unit plug-in as an effect, that plug-in runs inside WormaSounds and processes the audio you route through it. Plug-ins are made by other companies and their behavior is governed by their own developers' policies.
Children
WormaSounds collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published with the app and on the website with a new effective date.
